My true name is hidden somewhere in my mind.
My family was destroyed by forces unknown.
My home seems to have never existed.
Was it all a lie? My memories seem to deceive me. They disagree with the details of the past and the world of the present. Everything in my mind seems to be a contradiction.
I am a former soldier of the Irawan military. My name is supposed to be Jarenth. That was the name they gave me when I awakened in their infirmary. They told me that they’d found me in a burning house, the sole survivor of my village. Apparently I’d been awake once before and told them my name. They claim that was all I’d been able to remember. They trained me, and gave me a place to live, or more accurately, to exist. Life was something to be enjoyed. All I ever did was prepare myself for war. There was nothing enjoyable about the isolation I suffered because it was just that: isolation.
About three months ago, a prisoner was brought in. Since they couldn’t find a proper cell for her, they stuck her in the isolation room next to mine. I was on my way back from the latrine when she was being brought in. She’s given me a strange look, as though she recognized me. Not long after, they killed her, but not before I found a note sticking out from under her door.
There was no Jarenth, and she wondered why I went by that name. The name the Irawans had given my village had been a lie. No such village had ever existed. And I had my family had died when I was a child. Unfortunately, she hadn’t written my true name, where she knew me from, or for that matter why I should believe her. And yet I did believe her.
So I left the military. They tried to keep me, but the Irawan constitution outlaws forced military service. I was able to leave without any sort of hearing, although they did strongly recommend I stay. I’m sure they’ve already got black ops on the way to take me out. No self respecting military would sink so much money into a soldier like me and just let him walk away.
Now it’s time for me to find out who I am, why I was taken and lied to, and just what it is that the Irawan military really wants.
